It could be because their posting activity no longer interests you, something they said or believe in offends you, or you just need to cut back on who you follow for time purposes. It is typically best to unfollow someone quietly and without an announcement to them about it, unless the person is someone you have known for a long time who would notice and find your unfriending puzzling or hurtful. In a situation like this, it is often best to explain yourself politely, for you may be able to resolve the problem (and save a friendship) instead of losing a contact completely.

2. Don't spam your friends or your business contacts.

While many use social media to promote their business activities, it is possible to do so without appearing like your only interest in following people is to promote yourself. Interact and engage with others-show interest in their activities, don't just promote your own. Don't comment on blog posts simply to link to your own site or services, as that's a quick way to be labeled a spammer and be blocked from numerous websites. Don't mass-follow people on Twitter and expect the effort to be reciprocated because again, you will only look like (and likely be) a spammer.

Set a limit on how often and when you post promotional messages. For instance, say you are an artist with a gallery show opening coming up. It's great to send invites out to your contacts via Facebook-once. Post an initial announcement about the opening there and on Twitter, and then maybe repeat the announcement once a week and right before the event to remind people. Posting constantly about it, multiple times a day, is not cool and likely to annoy people more than generate interest. Asking others to copy and help spread your announcement, without ever doing the same in return for them, is also bad form.

That said, posting a regular, routine schedule of updates to your social media network helps keep you in your readers' consciousness. I've found it a good schedule to follow to post at a Facebook update once a day, to the pages I'm looking to promote. Twitter can be used multiple times a day, say 2-6 at best, or else you begin to potentially lose your readers to over-promotion.

Even for non-business uses, people can be seen as "spammers" for how they use, or abuse, social media. Be considerate about how many Twitter contest entry posts you "re-tweet". Many people find it annoying to constantly see things like "Re-tweet this message to be entered in a drawing for a new iPad!" popping up in their Twitter stream. If you want to partake in such contests, consider setting up a separate Twitter account just for posting them. On Facebook, is it really necessary to allow a game application to constantly post your newest high scores to your news feed? Do you really need Foursquare to copy all your status updates (including visits to the grocery store or work) to your Facebook and Twitter streams? Be careful on Facebook with application invitations as well. Sending them repeatedly to everyone on your friends list can be annoying, and these apps can spread viruses to your friends.

3. Don't assume over-familiarity with celebrities.

Famous individuals are increasingly "breaking the fourth wall" between themselves and their fans. Musicians, actors, writers, and other public individuals can often be found participating on social media networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, and it's certainly good, cheap publicity for them. It can be exciting as a fan to have a celebrity you admire respond to one of your Tweets, or friend you back on Facebook. But it's important to remember that such contact does not make this person your new best friend. Repeatedly making wall posts on a celebrity's Facebook asking for autographs or personal favors is not good form. Neither is sending them Farmville invitations! (Yes, I have seen at least one celebrity post on her wall begging her "friends" to stop sending her invitations to join Mafia Wars, Farmville, and other Facebook games.) Also, don't simply try to use celebrities' large reader base to promote yourself, through posting advertisements for your own band or activity on their Facebook or MySpace walls.

But more than anything, you really, really don't want to end up like these fans, who used a musician's Twitter stream to track down his travel schedule, and when he'd be at his house so they could get pictures taken with him. Act like that, and you're just one step short of being taken to court for being an internet stalker.

4. Think before you type.

The anonymity of the internet often makes it easier for people to say things to each other that they wouldn't say face-to-face, and politeness can fly right out the window. It can also make it difficult to interpret tone, for sarcasm and irony don't always come across they way they might be intended. If you feel angry or upset about something you read on-line, or a comment made in response to something you've posted in your blog or elsewhere, don't jump to respond angrily right away. Take some time to calm down, walk around the block, make a cup of coffee...distance yourself in some fashion. Compose a calm response in your head before sitting down to type it up, or debate whether it's even worth responding at all. Some people purposefully set out to cause flamewars and anger on the internet, which is why there's a long-standing rule of netiquette: "Please don't feed the trolls."

If someone has called you out for saying something they find offensive, try to listen to their concerns instead of becoming defensive. I've seen friends repost insensitive jokes or statements regarding race, gender, weight, class, disability, political leanings, and religion. You might not even realize that a statement is offensive to others until it is pointed out to you, in which case, an apology can go a long way-and much further than telling someone to "suck it up" and not to be "so sensitive".

5. Remember who is reading your posts-or who could be reading.

If you don't privacy-lock your Twitter, LiveJournal or Facebook feeds, anyone on the internet can find them, and it might not be the people you want seeing your opinions, complaints, and activities. There have been stories of people being fired from their jobs for complaining about their boss on Facebook-when they had their boss on their friends list! Or fired after claiming a sick day and then showing up in posted photographs at a party that day instead. In one study in 2009, 8% of surveyed companies reported firing someone over their use of social media, and 17% reported having problems with how their employees use social media.

A potential landlord, employer, client or even a date can look your name up on a social network service and learn more about you than you might want them to know. Embarrassing pictures posted of you as a joke among friends could easily create the wrong impression of your professionalism, or lack thereof. If there are such pictures of you out there on the net, politely ask your friends to "un-tag" you from them if you think it could be trouble for your professional life (or better yet, ask them to delete the pictures entirely). I love Kid Cudi's new concept album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day as it is a solid concept album for a time when concept albums are rare and hard to find. It is the perfect follow-up to his mixtape, which many could have easily mistaken for a studio release. The production is polished as Kid Cudi works with Kanye West, and actually has some money to spend; on A Kid Named Cudi the production was solid for a mixtape, and Emile has returned to work on Man on the Moon but this one goes a lot farther. A Kid Named Cudi was a largely uneven release, and he needed Kanye West to take Man on the Moon to the next level.

Unlike Jay-Z though Kid Cudi did not rely on Kanye West for inspiration and was able to handle Man on the Moon on his own. The lyrics and solid, and stunning, because I was beginning to wonder if Kid Cudi could really rap or if he simply had a gimmick. The bangers on this album include Heart of a Lion, and Soundtrack to My Life. Hyyer and Pursuit of Happiness are also very good. However Kid Cudi is already being imitated by Wale, which is a good sign that he may be able to finish what Jay Electronica started to push from the underground into the mainstream two years ago. At this point I think that Wale wants to be Kid Cudi though, just like Jay-Z wanted to be a conscious artist but could not find it within himself to do so a while back.

The album is actually broken down into 5 acts. Most of the musical rhetoric deals largely with themes already touched upon by Madvillan and MF Doom, and arguably they are a lot better than Kid Cudi but the Kid brings a lot of metaphorical marijuana and prescription medications into the booth and therefore has his own unique take on Space Rap. However as far as concept albums go this record doesn't even come close to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, arguably the best concept album of this decade. The fact that Kid Cudi is putting Cleveland back on the scene, and bringing a new energy for East Coast hip-hop, of which a new gimmick and tactic has long been overdue in order for them to compete with the South, is a good thing. Him and Wale together may have the effect of bringing some long overdue respect to the area ...

Starting from iOS 4.0, Apple completely cut off the support for aging original iPhone EDGE and iPod touch first-generation. Their decision of course was justified because of the low RAM found in these first-gen devices which were released back in 2007.

While iOS 4.2.1 is still available for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G, they are barely capable of running it, and that too without the goodness of multitasking, wallpapers and Folders.

But all is not lost as the iPhone jailbreak community has now come up with a mod, which brings the complete look and feel of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch 1G and 2G. The mod is basically based on the iPhone OS 3.1.3, to replicate the experience of iOS 4 on the first and second generation iPhone and iPod touch.

This custom firmware, dubbed WhiteD00r, includes everything from: wallpapers, new semi transparent dock (and UI), backgrounds, all new icons from iOS 4.x, Voice Control, multitasking, video recording, and more. Full list of features can be found here.

Before we start with the top apps, remember that these are only for jailbroken iPhones because Apple does not allow these apps to be downloaded from the official app store. All of these apps can be found in the Cydia application that shows up after you jailbreak your iPhone. If you would like to know how to jailbreak your iPhone then refer to other guides, or you may wait till I publish one in the near future. I will also teach you how to carrier unlock it so that it may be used with other carriers than AT&T in the US. Now, without further ado, here are the 5 essential apps for a jailbroken iPhone.

1. Winterboard

To customize your iPhone and make it truly yours, then this is the app you would need. Apple does not allow users to tweak their OS and their layout of the icons/color schemes. However, this app has a different theme for all personalities and tastes. It can make your iPhone look like Windows 7, or like the HTC Arya, and much much more. If you don't like the simple interface of the iPhone, then this is the first app you need to download.

2. iRealSMS/SwirlyMMS 2

I put these apps together because they both fall in the text message group and it would be wrong to have one without the other. iRealSMS does something truly extraordinary with the iPhone texts. With this app, you can easily reply to your text messages when it pops up while you are in another app, instead of the iPhone closing your current app and opening the messages app. As well as the quick reply, you can also quick compose a text if you are in another app or a game without opening the messages app again. Now, on to SwirlyMMS 2. With this app, you will be able to use your MMS capabilities with a carrier unlock. Normally, the iPhone does not allow T-Mobile users to use their MMS plans which is a real waste of money. With this app, you can easily send and receive MMS because it is integrated into your messages app.

3. 3G Unrestrictor

Apps like Skype do not allow you to use them over 3G or Edge or GPRS, but only WiFi. For the time being, Skype is allowing its users to use the app with 3G. However this is only until August, and after that you would have to pay Skype to use it over 3G or Edge. However, with this app, you just add what app you want to unrestrict and that's it. Simple as that. A must have for traveling users who aren't close to WiFi hotspots.

4. Make It Mine

Now, this app is one of those just for fun apps. All this app does is change the carrier name to whatever you want it to say. For example, I changed my carrier name to my name so it is now personalized. Also, you are able to change your banner to say whatever you want it to say. This is to be used side-by-side with winterboard to make your iPhone yours.

5. Installous

Lastly, this app should be used for good and not for illegal things. This app should be used to download apps that were not accepted into the app store or where outdated. These 3rd party apps are great ideas that you should download to get more variety than the app store.

Traveling abroad with your cell phone can be simple and fun or it can be a nightmare. The worst part of this nightmare is the ending that leaves you with a ridiculous bill consisting of numerous fees that will surprise you to say the least. In order to avoid these unnecessary charges there are a few things that you will want to know.

You need to know the difference between CDMA and GSM. You will want to determine which of these types of phones you are currently using. You also will want to understand "unlocking" and how it affects your ability to use your phone outside of the US. One more important part of traveling outside of the country is learning how to obtain and use prepaid SIM cards.

GSM cell phones use SIM cards. AT&T and T-Mobile are two of the major GSM carriers on the west coast. There are others but all you need to determine is whether your phone has a SIM card or not, and whether it is quad band. Different areas of the world use different "bands" i.e. frequencies so while you might be ok in some areas with a dual or tri band phone, quad band assures that you can travel to just about anywhere and have a phone that is compatible with the local network.

If your phone meets both of these criteria, you simply need to find someone who can unlock it for you. GSM phones come from the manufacturer "locked" into the service provider who sells them. Unlocking your phone allows you not only usage outside of the country, but you can also switch to another GSM carrier at home if you so choose. Finding an unlock service can be as simple as checking craigslist or asking a sales rep at one of your local GSM stores. While they do not perform this service for you, someone in the store should be able to direct you to the right place. Lastly, once you have reached your travel destination you will want to purchase a prepaid SIM card that allows you minutes on that particular network. These are available in frequently visited locations, airports, gift stores, etc. Ask your travel agent before you leave if you are able to.

Now let's take a look at the CDMA companies. These include Verizon, Sprint, and many smaller localized services such as Metro PCS and Cricket Mobile. Here is the bad news. If you choose to deal with one of these companies when you travel your options are both limited and expensive. The main problem being that the rest of the world does not use CDMA technology so your Verizon or Sprint phone simply will not work in most foreign markets. It's a bit like the metric system versus standard measurements. Verizon will happily rent you a "World" phone for about $250 that works in most countries. A friend of mine traveled to Europe recently and spent $2.49 per minute plus long distance fees. She ended up with a bill in the neighborhood of $500!

The good news is that you do have other options. For one, if you are in a position to upgrade your contract and get a new phone, there are a couple of CDMA phones available currently which allow you to use GSM also once your phone has been unlocked. These are both Blackberry devices, the Storm and the Tour respectively.

If on the other hand you are not in a position to renew your contract or do not care to, it is easy enough to find a used or refurbished GSM phone that you can purchase for a lot less than $250. I have seen used quad band phones for $30 and up. These are nothing fancy but they will work. Once you have obtained a quad band GSM phone you will need to unlock it. See paragraph four for details and about purchasing a prepaid GSM card.

In summary:

Obtain a quad band GSM phone.
Unlock this phone for international use.
Purchase a prepaid SIM card at your destination.
Pop in your new SIM and start calling.

Here is one last piece of advice. Don't leave your $800 3GS iphone in your hotel room. It will almost certainly vanish and there's not a whole lot that you can do about it.

Chronic Dev Team has finally released the much awaited GreenPois0n RC5 which brings full untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for all iOS devices. Unlike Redsn0w 0.9.7, GreenPois0n RC5 doesn’t require you to have SHSH blobs of 4.2b3 saved on Cydia. You can jailbreak any iOS device out of the box on iOS 4.2.1 using this latest version of GreenPois0n.

The following instructions will help you jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod touch 2G/3G/4G, iPad and Apple TV 2G using GreenPois0n.

NOTE: If your iPhone 4 rely on an unlock, do not update to iOS 4.2.1 yet as doing so will upgrade your baseband, making it impossible for now to unlock.

Step 1: Download GreenPois0n from the link given below.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone via USB to your computer and click on “Jailbreak” as seen in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Now follow the following onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode:

• Press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds


• Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.


• Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

Step 4: GreenPois0n will now start “Jailbreaking” your iOS device untethered on 4.2.1.

Step 5: Your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch should now be successfully jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1. Now start “Loader” found on the homescreen and install Cydia.

This is it! You are done !

Since the launch of the version 4 back in August, the new Digg has been getting minor over-hauls time and again. One of the main reasons of the frequent changes is to bring back the user experience to the Digg community. Even though, the team at Digg did many mistakes which resulted in losing user-base, I still credit them a lot for the amount of efforts they are putting in to bring the community back.

They have been adding features ranging from upcoming to bury button, everything has been added as per the user request. They have also been tweaking up the design since then. When I logged onto Digg today, I found an invitation to view the new design. Clicking on that, I realized, the new design is even simpler.

Two of the things I loved about Digg v4 when it launched were the simplicity of design and speed of the site, but that at the cost of cutting almost all the features. Digg v4, however, after 6 months, looks very promising. It has all the features that diggers need, a better design than v3, faster to browse, lesser errors and an over-all better user-experience. The new design is only rolled out yet to 15 percent Digg users and will be soon rolled out to everyone else.

Digg team on the official Digg blog said

This new design includes a new way to browse between the different sections of the site and an easier way to filter your content. We’ve simplified the design to make stories more prominent and easier to read. The newly organized profile page makes it a snap to see all your statistics. And last but not least, a new submission flow makes submitting stories easier. We couldn’t wait any longer to share these with our users and gather feedback before a public rollout, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Even though the design has been built on the user feedback, Digg still allows you to switch between the designs. Apart from the re-design, Digg has finally been able to import all the user-stats from v3, which took much longer than expected.
